ST. GEORGE — A woman going to work and her son going to work out had their day disrupted when their vehicle burst into flames on Tuesday.

The incident began when emergency personnel were dispatched at approximately 2 p.m. to a report of a vehicle fire in a parking lot at 963 S. Bluff St.

St. George Fire Department Battalion Chief Coty Chadburn told St. George News that crews arrived at Summit Athletic Club to find the front end of the sport utility vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

“The fire was contained to the vehicle; there was no damage to the building,” he said. “No injuries to the occupants or the fire department to report.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and there are many possibilities as to the cause, Bradburn added.

“It could have been mechanical in the fuel system, could be bad wiring from someone installing an amp, overloaded wiring — there are many possibilities,” he said. “All I know right now is that the fire originated from the engine compartment.”

The vehicle’s occupants were not inside the vehicle at the time. The man stopping to work out at the gym was inside the building and had just dropped off his mother who works nearby.

St. George Police Department responded to the incident to assist the fire department with traffic control inside the parking lot. The athletic club was evacuated for a short period until the fire was extinguished.

This report is based on statements from first responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
