“It’s amazing that we have people in recovery, but the best part is we have people in recovery that become passionate about helping people find recovery,” said Kelly Cluff, director of marketing and admissions for Lion’s Gate. “So we have both the personal experience and the professional knowledge.”

Each member of the Lion’s Gate staff has personally encountered addiction and the subsequent journey of recovery, either within themselves or through witnessing the recovery of a loved one. This firsthand experience equips them with a unique ability to guide others toward healing with compassion and empathy.

“I’ve always had a desire to help those that are struggling,” said Megan Herrick, associate clinical mental health counselor at Lion’s Gate. “I see how addiction impacts families, and I see what recovery can do for people and the benefits of going through the program and creating a life that you value.” 

Herrick has been part of the Lion’s Gate team for two years, initially joining as an intern. A year ago, she earned her license to become an associate clinical mental health counselor, furthering her commitment to aiding others on their journey to wellness.

For 11 years, Herrick’s father has been on the path of recovery, a journey she has closely observed, witnessing his transformative growth. Inspired by his success, she strives to instill the same level of achievement in every client she assists.

“I love the Lion’s Gate approach,” she said. “I love the staff I work with. My favorite part is seeing a lot of hope come back into people’s eyes and just a drive for a better life.”

What sets Lion’s Gate apart from other facilities is its wide scope of programs, she added. Everything they do is focused on client success, which is achieved through an environment of comfortability. The caring staff has a passion for their work and can provide treatment with empathy and understanding.

Clients can expect daily group and individual therapy, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings and recreational therapy. Activities such as service projects, yoga, rope courses, hiking and other experiential activities promote both mental and physical well-being. The goal is to provide activities that allow clients to re-learn how to have fun without a controlling substance involved.

“It’s never too late to keep trying because your life is worth it,” Herrick said.

Case manager Cam Olsen has been with Lion’s Gate for over two years. Also in recovery, he started a life of sobriety on April 24, 2019.

“I like helping people, and I feel that I can help them with insight, and with my experience and strength and hope that helped me throughout my recovery,” he said.

Olsen’s job includes helping clients set up court dates, clearing warrants and getting into vocational rehabilitation, also known as “voc rehab.” He assists with financial budgets, sober living, obtaining or getting back a suspended driver’s license and more. For those transitioning from residential treatment to real life, voc rehab helps clients decide on a career path and navigate grant programs and other options for school, whether returning or starting anew.

“It helps them to start to become productive members of society,” he said. “But they also have that accountability. Sometimes, they just need a second chance.”

The most fulfilling aspect of his job, Olsen said, is seeing clients come into treatment feeling broken and worthless, and then watching their journey from darkness to light as they take responsibility, establish boundaries and find joy in life without relying on alcohol or drugs.

“There is life to be lived, and you can succeed and do everything you ever wanted,” he continued. “There is hope. There is life in recovery. As long as you’re honest, open-minded and willing, anything is possible.”

In the journey of recovery, acknowledging powerlessness and recognizing the chaos in one’s life marks the initial stride.
