PROVO — As the high school track and field season heads down the home stretch, athletes from several Southern Utah schools made strong showings at the Brigham Young University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The 114th running of the popular BYU Invitational attracted more than 3,300 athletes from some 132 high schools in Utah and neighboring states.

This year, there was no separation between large and small schools. Some events had upwards of 300 entries, spanning all classifications.

Summarized below are selected highlights from the meet, focusing on top-six finishes by athletes from Southern Utah high schools. Snow Canyon was the highest-scoring 4A team at the meet, with the Warrior boys finishing second overall with 59 team points and the Snow Canyon girls taking fifth overall with 42 points.

In another two weeks (May 16-18), BYU’s Clarence Robison Track will once again be the host venue for the upcoming Utah High School Activities Association 1A through 6A state championships.

Boys

Crimson Cliffs senior Tyler West tied for third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.75 seconds. His teammate Easton Lott, a junior at Crimson Cliffs, placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.82. Nearly 330 athletes competed in the event.

Snow Canyon captured three of the top five spots in the 110-meter hurdles. Senior Matt Maclennan took second with a time of 13.97 seconds (winner Josh Hamblin of Weber finished in 13.84). Coming in third with a time of 14.18 was Snow Canyon senior Semaj Thompson, while fellow senior Trevor Gough placed fifth in 14.61. Austin Eaton, a senior at Crimson Cliffs, took fourth with a time of 14.50.

Snow Canyon’s Thompson and Maclennan also placed a respective second and third in the 300 hurdles. Thompson’s time was 37.69 seconds, while Maclennan clocked at 37.84. Coming in fourth place was Cedar’s McKoy Smith, who finished in 38.08. Weber’s Hamblin was the winner of the event with a time of 37.00.

Canyon View senior Qwentyn Petty took third in the 400-meter race in a time of 48.17 seconds. His teammate and fellow senior Asher Groft placed fifth with a time of 48.25.

Pine View senior Teancum Jensen placed second in the discus with a throw of 175 feet, 5 inches. Jensen also took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 51 feet, 9 inches.

Taking third in the shot put was Pine View senior Colton Sam Fong, whose top mark measured 53 feet, 3 inches.

Snow Canyon junior Joseph Smith placed second in the javelin with a throw of 181 feet, 11 inches. Taggart Harris, a senior at Beaver High, placed fifth with a mark of 178-110, while Austin Crosby of Snow Canyon took sixth with 176-10.

Crimson Cliffs’ Austin Eaton placed third in the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 9.75 inches.

Snow Canyon senior Owen Iloa placed fourth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 5 inches.

Snow Canyon placed second out of 56 teams in the 4×100 relay, finishing in 41.56 seconds. The Warriors also took sixth in the 4×400.

Canyon View took second in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:40.70.

Girls

Snow Canyon sophomore sprinter Amelia Nadauld took first place in three events. She won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, beating out more than 300 other athletes in each event. Her winning times were 11.92 seconds in the 100 and 24.12 in the 200.

Nadauld also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.02 seconds.

Also of note, Canyon View senior Gabriele Dabb placed fifth overall in the 100 with a time of 12.31 and fourth overall in the 200 with a time of 25.01.

Senior Ebony Dodoo of Delta won the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.40. Desert Hills senior Lucy Harris tied for second in that same event, posting a time of 14.54.

Hurricane senior Matilyn Dotson placed third in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 6 inches.

Snow Canyon junior Kennedy Scott placed second in the shot put with a mark of 38 feet, 5.75 inches. Cedar senior Kiara Hansen took third with a top mark of 38 feet, 1.25 inches. Nearly 200 athletes competed in the event.

Snow Canyon senior Ashlee Harris placed fifth in the javelin with a throw measuring 117 feet, 7 inches. Hurricane junior Kate Carter placed sixth with a throw of 117 feet, 4 inches.

In relay events, Desert Hills took third in the 4×100 with a time of 48.65, while Canyon View placed fifth in 48.80. Canyon View also won the sprint medley relay in 4:27.84.
