ST. GEORGE — Records fell and tents flew as more than 2,000 track and field athletes from 69 high schools competed at Pine View High School this past weekend.

In addition to the Pine View Invitational itself, the two-day event included a MVP Sports Championship session, where prequalified athletes competed in finals only, without trial heats.

Pine View head coach Dave Holt said the event featured some 5,200 entries and 2,200 athletes, making it one of the largest high school events ever staged in Southern Utah.

Holt said a sudden microburst of wind on Saturday damaged dozens of teams’ canopy tents, blowing several of them high into the air. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, he said.

“Just tents and gear everywhere,” Holt added.

Snow Canyon earned the most points among Southern Utah teams, with the Warriors taking first in the boys meet and sixth in the girls.

Meanwhile, host team Pine View placed third in the boys meet, while Crimson Cliffs tied for fourth. See top 10 team scores listed below.

“We had tons of amazing performances,” Holt said, noting that more than a dozen meet records were set, including three that were also new all-time Utah state records.

American Fork senior Daniel Simmons shattered his own state record in the 3,200-meter run with a remarkable time of 8:42.47. The previous state record, which Simmons set last May, was 8:49.05.

Simmons and Olympus senior JoJo Jordan also both broke the all-time state record in the 1,600-meter race, with Jordan crossing the finish line in 4:04.60 and Simmons taking second with a time of 4:04.78. The previous state record was 4:05.16, set by Thomas Boyden of Skyline in 2020.

The top 24 finishers in the race all finished in under 4:20.
