ST. GEORGE — The spring exhibition of the Dixie Watercolor Society, themed “A Splash of Color,” is commencing with a welcoming reception, extending an invitation for the community attend.

“The theme is symbolic of watercolors since water is the medium that makes watercolors dance across the paper,” Dixie Watercolor Society Vice President Cheryl Sachse said. “Artists’ interpretation of the theme will be varied and is always exciting since we have very talented artists and many different styles.”

The spring exhibition, to be held at the St. George Art Museum, will feature a diverse collection of 137 paintings contributed by 60 distinct artists. Noteworthy figures in the art world, including renowned artist Roland Lee, will have their works showcased in this event.

Sponsored by Pig’s Ear American Bistro, Mary’s Cheesecakes and Moore and More Gourmet Popcorn, “A Splash of Color” is set to run from March 9 through May 25, offering free admission to all members of the public. A reception and grand opening ceremony are scheduled to kick off the exhibition on Saturday, March 9, from 5-7 p.m. at the museum.

Attendees can expect an evening of celebration and artistic appreciation while having a chance to indulge in an array of treats and refreshing beverages and mingle with others amid the artworks on display.

Tom Howard, a distinguished Salt Lake City artist renowned for his contributions to the art community, will be lending his expertise as one of the esteemed judges for the exhibition. In addition, St. George City Mayor Michelle Randall will also play a pivotal role by selecting the recipient of the coveted Mayor’s Choice Award, adding a touch of local prestige to the event. All awards will be announced during the reception. Live music will be provided by violinist Longo Chu and pianist Dr. Christian Bohnenstengel. 

“The purpose of the Spring Exhibition is to provide a venue for our artists to showcase their art,” Sachse said. “Bring awareness and promote, encourage others to share in the joy of art, bring awareness to the public and provide an avenue to fund programs that (DWS) provides for the public.”

Programs include free art classes in conjunction with the St. George Children’s Museum. The Dixie Watercolor Society provides free supplies and teachers, and a culminated art show showcasing the children’s art will be on display inside Gallery 35 in April. The society also provides free classes and supplies to several assisted living facilities. Their focus is on bringing high-caliber artists from around the country to assist artists in furthering their skills.
