Two Region 9 teams chalked up wins Friday night in Week 2 high school football action. But five local teams remained winless.
Cedar defeated Bear River 34-28 on the road, and Pine View held off Iron County rival Canyon View 24-20.
But Snow Canyon and Crimson Cliffs lost close contests, and both Dixie and Desert Hills were shut out. Hurricane, meanwhile, was engaged in a dog fight with Moapa Valley, Nevada, and the Tigers fell 30-29 in a game that went down to the wire.
Manti 39, Snow Canyon 29
For the second week in a row, the Warriors went on a roller coaster of emotion after losing a game at home that they led at halftime.
Senior quarterback Joseph Smith, in a nice bounce-back effort from last week’s 13-9 loss to Stansbury, threw three touchdown passes in the first two quarters and things couldn’t have started better for the Warriors.
Trey Vaughn (9 yards), JT Westbrook (12 yards) and Cael Johnson (31 yards) caught the TD tosses from Smith.
Manti stopped the bleeding with a late touchdown before halftime. Those were the first of 32 unanswered points by the visitors, who trailed 21-7 at halftime but reeled off 19 points in the third quarter to take command.
Lincoln Alder stepped in front of a Smith pass and returned the interception 31 yards for a pick-6 to open the third, cutting Snow Canyon’s lead to 21-14.
Carter Mason caught a 22-yard scoring pass and then quarterback Maison Starkweather’s 2-yard keeper put the Templars ahead for good, 26-21.
Snow Canyon’s fumbled punt in the fourth quarter led to Starkweather’s 37-yard TD pass to Stone Mortensen.
The Warriors did not go quietly as Smith threw his fourth TD of the night to Issaiah Thompson and Snow Canyon had hope with 2:15 left.
Smith’s last effort was intercepted for a pick-6 by Manti’s Colby Simons, providing the final margin with 1:14 remaining.
The 3A Templars are now 2-0 after beating two 4A teams, Pine View and Snow Canyon.
The Warriors are 0-2 and are on the road in Las Vegas, Nevada, in Week 3 for a contest against Cathedral High School.
Lehi 35, Desert Hills 0
Lehi, ranked No. 2 in the state of Utah, didn’t have much trouble against a Thunder team that missed injured senior running back Tytan Mason.
The visiting 6A Pioneers led 14-0 after the first quarter and took a 21-0 advantage into halftime.
Lehi’s explosive duo of quarterback Jett Niu and receiver Mays Madsen connected three times for touchdowns against the Thunder, scoring on tosses of 1, 50 and 19 yards.
Devaughn Eka rumbled for a 7-yard rushing score in the first quarter and backup Kannon Whiteley threw a 41-yard TD toss to Wade Watson in the fourth quarter for Lehi.
Desert Hills dropped to 0-2 and is on the road in Week 3, at Las Vegas, Nevada for the second time this year for a matchup against Centennial High School.
Pine View 24, Canyon View 20
At Pine View, the Panthers held off a late Canyon View comeback, stopping the Falcons on fourth and goal with 4:44 left in the fourth.
Then, from deep in their own territory, the Panthers repeatedly handed the ball to Kyle Richardson, who made enough first downs to run out the remaining time on the clock and secure the four-point victory.
Pine View never trailed in the game, although Canyon View did tie it up 7-7 midway through the second quarter. However, the Panthers then scored 10 unanswered points before halftime to go up 17-7 at the break.
The Panthers extended their lead to 24-7 before the Falcons rallied to score two successive TDs in the third to pull within striking distance.
“Canyon View did a great job of controlling the clock and making our defense work a little bit,” Pine View head coach KJ Boyer said afterward. “But we had a good first half. We set the tone and were able to score.”
Boyer credited the team’s defense for its crucial goal-line stand in the fourth.
“They stepped it up enough right at the very end and we got out of here with a win,” he said.
Pine View’s first score came after a Panther interception had ended Canyon View’s opening drive. Just four plays later, Pine View got a 4-yard run by Corbin Yocham and took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Canyon View quarterback Deegan Davies then scored on a 3-yard run with 5:46 left in the second quarter, with Asher Slack kicking the PAT to tie the game 7-7.
Pine View answered quickly, with quarterback Levi Shaw following a long pass completion with a 1-yard TD run to put the Panthers ahead 14-7.
Canyon View punted on its next possession, after which Pine View was able to get within field goal range. Kicker Luke Luekenga booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Panthers a 17-7 lead.
Early in the second half, Shaw connected with Kwade Sorensen on a 47-yard TD catch that put Pine View up 24-7 with 8:12 left in the third. That ended up being Pine View’s last score, but it proved to be enough.
Canyon View got back-to-back TDs in the third, with Davies first finding Trenton Ludlow in the end zone for a 12-yard TD catch. Then, with just 9 seconds left in the third, Davies made a 7-yard rushing TD to bring the Falcons within four, 24-20 (they were unable to get off their PAT kick attempt).
Neither team scored during the fourth quarter, although the Falcons came tantalizingly close, with Davies first rushing to inside the 10, then inside the 5. But the Falcons’ final fourth-down play ended with the Panthers breaking up a rushed pass along the sideline.
The result leaves both Pine View and Canyon View with 1-1 preseason records. Next Friday, the Panthers travel to Tooele to face the Buffaloes, while Canyon View plays cross-town rival Cedar in a contest to be staged at Southern Utah University’s Eccles Coliseum.

Mountain Ridge 58, Dixie 0
The 6A Sentinels had no problem with the Flyers at home as Mountain Ridge grounded Dixie.
According to the Deseret News, it was the second-largest loss in Dixie history and the 58 points surrendered by Dixie’s defense were the fourth-most ever allowed by the Flyers in one game.
The home team built a 23-0 lead after one quarter and led 37-0 at halftime.
Quarterback Wyatt Bingham threw four touchdown passes in the win and ran for two scores. Seven different Sentinels recorded a touchdown for the winners.
Dixie (0-2) looks for their first win in a Week 3 home matchup against Park City.
Bingham 17, Crimson Cliffs 7
The defending 4A state champions fell to 0-2 when a hard-fought battle at home against 6A Bingham ended on a late pick-6 by the visitors.
Crimson led at halftime 7-3 after quarterback Ryder Sherratt threw a 60-yard bomb for a touchdown to Malaki Alofipo.
Tyson Dunn threw a 20-yard TD toss to Kulimushi and the Miners took the lead for good at 10-7 with 56 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Both defenses played well in the game. A couple of missed plays on offense, and the late pick-6, led to the tough home loss for the Mustangs.
Crimson will look to get their first win in Week 3 on the road against a very tough 5A Springville team.
Cedar 34, Bear River 28
Cedar evened its record at 1-1, holding on to defeat Bear River on the road after taking a 27-0 lead into halftime.
Everett Kelling threw four touchdowns in the Cedar win, three of them to Krue Giles (scoring passes of 58, 44 and 29 yards).
Dylan Crowley collected a 20-yard TD toss from Kelling as well.
Caleb Paule’s 41-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter proved to be the winning score as the Reds withstood a furious Bears rally late in the contest.
“We need to learn how to finish ball games but I’m encouraged by the effort given by the boys and coaching staff,” said Cedar head coach Tye Hiatt afterward. “We could have easily given up once they made a run but we stayed together.”
Hiatt said he was proud of the team’s focus and toughness.
“It’s hard to win football games, especially on the road and I thought our kids handled the travel very well,” he added.
Cedar will stay in Cedar City in Week 3 for their crosstown rivalry game against Canyon View.
Moapa Valley (Nevada) 30, Hurricane 29
First-year head coach Jerry Cowan saw his Tigers take a late lead in the fourth quarter but could not stop the Pirates on their last drive of the night.
Conner Clyde ran in a 5-yard touchdown and Austyn McRoberts ran for a 7-yard score as Hurricane took a quick lead.
Moapa Valley reeled off the next 22 points, but the Tigers clawed right back into it with a 53-yard scoring scamper by McRoberts and a 33-yard pitch-and-catch for a touchdown from Dylan Gabriel to McRoberts.
But the home team’s late heroics sent the Tigers back to Hurricane still seeking their first win. They’ll look for it in Week 3 in a home game versus Hillcrest.

Kanyon Okerlund scored twice and South Sevier, out of the 2A South, added a defensive score in shutting out 1A South Enterprise in the Wolves’ season opener.
